The members of Glassworks Village Co-operative in Owen Sound have put their money where their dreams are and raised more than $630,000 in investments with their backs against the wall to stop the sale of a 46-acre property in Owen Sound’s industrial park.

With a mortgage coming due on Feb. 10, 2024, and an assessment earlier this year valuing the land at $1.1 million, the Glassworks board voted in October to sell – but the members doubled down.

The group’s investment goal of $363,000, the amount needed to pay off the mortgage, was quickly exceeded with a final total of $636,000 raised.

“People stepped up,” Stevens said. “I think people underestimated the strength of the community.”
